SEC Power Rankings: Week 6

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think the shoulder shrug guy is going to be my mascot for the SEC Power Rankings for the rest of the year. After what we saw in week 5, I really don’t know what to make of the SEC. So my response, and the most appropriate one is this.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Seriously, what do I make of Ole Miss? A team that went on the road and forced Alabama to commit five turnovers and scored over forty points in Tuscaloosa, but was tied with Vanderbilt as late as the fourth quarter and got hammered by Florida?

And what about Alabama? They looked dreadful against Ole Miss but looked like the best team in the country against Georgia, how do you explain that?

Then there is Florida, a team that hadn’t really been impressive at all, and then lays a beatdown on the team many were putting as the top seed in the College Football Playoff? How do I process all this?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  1. LSU (4-0, Previous Week: 1st) LSU has the best player in the conference. I’d be mroe convinced they would stay here if he played quarterback.
  2.  Texas A&M (5-0, Previous Week: 5th) I’m still not sold they belong this high, but they have done enough so far to deserve it. You can easily make the case the Aggies might not have won against the Bulldogs had it not been for the two fumbles. We’ll find out more about the Aggies when they play Bama
  3. Florida (5-0, Previous Week: 7th) I’m even less sold on the Gators, but this isn’t my opinion on how these teams will ultimately fare, it is a ranking on what they have currently done. And Florida has done more than enough to earn this spot.
  4. Alabama (4-1, Previous Week: 4th) Alabama doesn’t get to move up simply because Florida and Texas A&M did enough to surpass them. Which team is Alabama, the one that committed five turnovers to Ole Miss, or the one that clocked Georgia? It’s hard to say at this point.
  5. Ole Miss (4-1, Previous Week: 2nd) Ole Miss still can control their own destiny in the West, but their favored son status took a big hit this weekend. It wasn’t that they lost as much as they got manhandled. If they beat Texas A&M and LSU, then they’ll be fine, but even though it is in Oxford, it’s hard to imagine that happening right now.
  6. Georgia (4-1, Precious Week: 3rd) And all the questions we have about Georgia come right back. They could still easily win their division, and win the SEC which would put them in the playoff if they had just the one loss, but whenever people start to believe this team is on the verge of being great, something like this past weekend happens.
  7. Mississippi State (3-2, Previous Week: 6th) The Bulldogs did not play well, and there are some serious identity issues they need to answer. Despite that, the main culprit for their loss this past weekend was more about two really poorly timed turnovers. The Bulldogs winning anywhere from 8 or 9 games wouldn’t surprise me.
  8. Kentucky (4-1, Previous Week: 8th) Maybe I should have sent the Wildcats ahead of the Bulldogs, but it’s hard to reward beating Eastern Kentucky in overtime when it took a late touchdown to even send it to overtime
  9. Missouri (4-1, Previous Week: 9th) is Missouri doing it again? There is probably not a less impressive 4-1 team in the country, but they still only have the one loss.
  10. Auburn (3-2, Previous Week: 12th) Auburn won. At this point, that is the most important thing for the Tigers.
  11. Arkansas (2-3, Previous Week: 13th) In a game between two teams that had been badly overhyped, the Razorbacks pulled it out. I don’t know if this is a sign the Razorbacks will salvage their season, but it’s at least a step in the right direction.
  12. Vanderbilt (2-3, Previous Week: 14th) Congratulations on escaping the bottom Vandy! I don’t know how long it lasts, but I can actually make a case for them winning some SEC games based on their defense.
  13. Tennessee (2-3, Previous Week: 10th) In all three of Tennessee’s losses, the Vols had leads of at least 13 points at some point in the game. Maybe they shouldn’t do that.
  14. South Carolina (2-3, Previous Week: 11th) I never thought I would see the day when a Steve Spurrier coached team was the worst in the SEC. But to argue other wise is pretty silly at this point. The Gamecocks are just a bad football team.

Maybe things will make more sense at the end of this week. But until then, just follow the lead of the SEC Power Rankings mascot.
