SEC Power Rankings: Week 2
The first week of the college football season is done. The SEC had a strong showing, and as such, there isn’t a ton of movement in the Power Rankings from Week 1 to Week 2. But there is some.
- Alabama (1-0, Previous Week: 1st) The Tide won, and they won rather easily. It was a game against a team most will consider to be a quality opponent in Wisconsin. They get to keep the top spot.
- Georgia (1-0, Previous Week: 3rd) The Bulldogs get moved up because Auburn went down. No, ULM isn’t striking fear into the hearts of many teams, but they won without any problems.
- Auburn (1-0, Previous Week: 2nd) If you wanted a chance to jump off the Jeremy Johnson hype train, you got your opportunity. He did throw a touchdown pass and ran for another, but he threw three interceptions. Johnosn only completed 11 of 21 pass attempts. If this is the way Johnson plays all year, the Tigers won’t come anywhere close to the SEC West title.
- LSU (0-0, Previous Week: 4th) We now find out how much the cancellation hurts the Tigers. It will be the talk of the week heading into Mississippi State’s game with the Tigers.
- Ole Miss (1-0, Previous Week: 5th) A 76-3 win might get you moved on most occasions, but not when the opponent is UT-Martin. The Rebels looked great on Saturday, but they were supposed to.
- Arkansas (1-0, Precious Week: 6th) The Razorbacks looked tough, but they also don’t get any bump simply because they played the UTEP Miners. If Brandon Allen can throw the football that well all year long, the Razorbacks will be dangerous. Let me see him do it against an SEC school and then I’ll be convinced.
- Texas A&M (1-0, Previous Week: 10th) The Aggies jump up the most. Texas A&M had the toughest opponent, and they handled the Arizona State Sun Devils pretty easily. For that, they get to go up three spots.
- Missouri (1-0, Previous Week: 7th) They Tigers destroyed SE Missouri State. Good for them.
- Mississippi State (1-0, Previous Week: 9th) No, the Bulldogs did not play their best football against Southern Miss. But of all the teams playing on Saturday, Mississippi State was the only one to play a true road game. Two really bad turnovers in the 1st quarter made life difficult on the Bulldogs throughout the rest of the game, so I’m not going to drop the Bulldogs at this point.
- Tennessee (1-0, Previous Week: 8th) The Vols pulled away in the second half of their game against Bowling Green, but they shouldn’t have had to. It was technically a neutral site game, but it as really a home game. The Vols should have been better.
- Florida (1-0, Previous Week: 12th) I’m not saying we should be in incredible awe over Florida’s blowout of New Mexico State, but they destroyed an inferior team. They did what they were supposed to, and combine that with our next team, and they get to go up a spot.
- South Carolina (1-0, Previous Week: 11th) South Carolina won a game neither team played well enough to win. But someone had to.
- Kentucky (1-0, Previous Week: 13th) Normally, having such a tough time with a Sun Belt team would get you to go down in the Rankings, especially when the game is at home. But we still have Vanderbilt.
- Vanderbilt (0-1, Previous Week: 14th) Vanderbilt was a home underdog to Kentucky. And they lost. So when is Derek Mason going to get fired, before or after season?
Come back next week to find out if there is any further shake up in the SEC Power Rankings.
