Number Two

Worst: 1975

Things fell apart for Paul Gregory after that 1971 season and he was never able to achieve a winning SEC record again. In 1974, he wasn’t able to even achieve a winning record overall. So Jimmy Bragan took over for the 1975 season and things hit rock bottom. The team went 16-24 (6-16). That .400 winning percentage is the worst for any MSU team playing at least 16 games in a season. Ron Polk was hired for the 1976 season and the rest is history…

Best: 1979

Coach Polk’s first trip to Omaha with Mississippi State (he took Georgia Southern there in 1973) was in 1979. The team won the SEC regular season, SEC Tournament and hosted Starkville’s first Regional. They beat out Murray State to advance to the College World Series where they beat #1 Cal State Fullerton (who had 60 wins) in the first game. The next two contests weren’t so kind as the Bulldogs lost to Texas and Pepperdine while CSF won the national title, but it was a great ride.
