Lady Bulldogs now 10-0 after 73-46 win against Lady Eagles
Defense travels on the road. You’ve always heard that expression but have never been quite sure of what it means at times. Now, if you look that up on Google or anywhere else, you’ll see the first half of this game where the Bulldogs held the Lady Eagles of Southern Miss to 1 made FG. You read that correctly, your Mississippi State Women’s Basketball team gave up only 1 FG in the first half. In total, they only gave up 8 points which is a school record for the least points allowed in a half. That also gave USM the least number of points scored in a half, and the worst FG percentage in a half.
The Bulldogs had a player hit a career milestone during this game. Senior Kendra Grant scored a couple of baskets and eclipsed the 1,000 point mark for her career. That’s huge for this Lady Bulldog squad as almost everyone who touched the floor this game ended up contributing in the scoring column. Only two players reached double-digits in scoring. Breanna Richardson got hot in the second half and ended up with 12 points on the game. Martha Alwal provided strong support from the bench and ended up with 10 points as she looks to work her way back into the starting lineup for SEC play. Only one player did not end up in the scoring column for the Lady Bulldogs, and that was LaKaris “Big Ticket” Salter. But she did supply a highlight reel ready no-look pass to Martha Alwal from around half court for an easy basket. Stellar freshman Victoria Vivians was held well in check by the Lady Eagles as she only contributed 7 points in the affair, to go along with 5 rebounds. Dominique Dillingham and Savannah Carter added 9 points a piece to the final score.
Southern Miss started off the game just as bad as you possibly could, only making one shot from the floor for the whole first half. That basket that was made came around the 2 minute mark in the half, which is about 18 minutes later than the Southern Miss coach would have liked. The Lady Eagles, however, came out in the second half and started scoring much more. Jerontay Clemons led the Lady Eagles with 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists in their defeat. No other player for the Southern Miss squad scored more than half that amount.
The Bulldogs return home to face off against the Mississippi Valley State Lady Devils tomorrow evening. The game will be televised on SEC Network +, which can be found online through the WatchESPN menu. Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM.
