Message Board Post of the Week: Chason Virgil

facebooktwitterreddit

Message Boards are a great place to go and discuss all things related to sports in general, whether it’s college, pro, or something else altogether. The one thing about them though is that it can become apparent at times some fans are completely consumed in their fandom and don’t pay too much attention to reality. We are all guilty of that at some point. So now we have the Message Board Post of the Week. Each week, I will go through some of the more popular message boards and find some good ones. Understand that good can mean a lot of things. It could mean insightful. It could mean it’s so bad it’s funny. It could mean that it is based on so many false perceptions that you can’t help but sit there and stare at your screen with your jaw dropped. These will all come from the public pages of the message boards, so I won’t be breaking any perceived privacy that someone might think they have.

On Thursday, we all learned that Chason Virgil, a 3 star QB recruit, no longer had a scholarship offer from Mississippi State. From all that has been said, it appears the coaching staff asked Virgil to take a gray shirt to sign with the 2016 class. Virgil is going to graduate this December and wanted to enroll this January. As a result, he refused and his scholarship offer is now gone. To say the least, the message boards lit up when this came out. We head back to SixPackSpeak.com for this week’s Message Board Post of the Week.

Wizard Started us off pretty innocently with this:

"MSU parting ways with Chason Virgil…was wondering about the stock pile of QB’s we were accumulating. After that it got a little bit more fun. msstate7 does not seem to approve of this move by the coaching staff.Tiano over Virgil? I trust our staff, but Virgil has an offer sheet a mile longToby Nash also is not on board with this decision as well. Why would we pull his scholarship offer at this point? Seems like we’d try to keep a 4* QB.For even more discontent, Palos verdes also decided to let his opinion be known. If this is true, it’s dumb as hell. This guy is about to get his 4th star across the board also. And it was at this point where the people who didn’t mind the thought process by Mullen and his staff decided to weigh in. Jesus Christ.Faustdog wanted to remind people about the way Coach Mullen and the rest of the staff evaluates players, and how Mullen has gone about winning this season. Originally Posted by Palos verdesIf this is true, it’s dumb as hell. It’s a way for people on message boards to make it clear they are being sarcastic. hatfieldms had the same thought process as Faustdog.Somebody hurry up and send Mullen a link to the 247 recruiting rankings!!!!!Originally Posted by Palos verdesIf this is true, it’s dumb as hell. Virgil was a take as long as there existed the possibility of Dak leaving early, but since the chance of that became minuscule as of Saturday night, the staff did what they had to do and presented Virgil with his options. If anything, they did right by informing him as soon as it was clear what must be done, instead of stringing him along until he didn’t have many options left.Hammer Down though wasn’t buying it.Quote Originally Posted by thf24 View PostTiano was and is the #1 QB on our board and THE QB of the 2015 class. Nobody thought Dak was going pro this whenever this guy committed back in the summer.Bottom line is they took him while they could. When they committed Nick Tiano, they did not need Virgil. They kept him until they could not anymore. I expect that we are holding spots for higher rated recruits.Wizard made a point no one had mention until this point. We have taken QBs in HS and turned them into slot guys..Lewis and Myles..is it possible we were thinking this with Virgil? Only reason I can come up with to why we offered a 6-1 170 QB in the first place.Quite possibly the most important post about this came from coach66.It tells me that somebody unexpected atA position of need has come to light. IDon’t like they way it has gone down and I’m sure Mullen doesn’t either butIt is a business.Titus then brings up something that I hate about recruiting, and that is coaches aren’t allowed to talk about recruiting. It’s like they are in Fight Club.I have no inside information, but our coaches cannot explain why they did this. Is it possible that they had a good reason, not related to having too many quarterbacks committed? And then GoToHellOleMiss and thf24 reminded us all why Message Boards can be a gold mine.Welcome to the world of the interwebs!!Quote Originally Posted by thf24 View PostIt really puzzles me as to what some of you douchebags get out of being complete and total assholes without contributing anything to the discussion. Here’s the deal. Recruiting is tough. College coaches have to make tough decisions all the time as do the high school prospects. Mississippi State is accumulating a large number of prospects, so I am not surprised that they are having to cut ties with someone. Virgil is small, and we have shown that our offense is run much better with a bigger, stronger quarterback. It’s just the way it works. The high school coach of Virgil is Jeff Neill and he isn’t happy about this.Miss St. pulls scholarship from our QB Chason Virgil w/16 days til graduation. Classless move by “coach” Dan Mullen— Jeff Neill (@neill_jeff) November 21, 2014Chason Virgil -35 tds/6int passing -8td rushing. One of the best young people I’ve ever coached -only flaw was trusting “coach” Mullen.— Jeff Neill (@neill_jeff) November 21, 2014I understand that he is trying to take up for his player, and to a certain extent, I think that is a good thing. But from what I understand, this school is pretty good. They have players who are going to be heavily recruited. The last thing that his players need is their coach scaring off Big Time Division 1 coaches from recruiting their players if they have to make a tough decision like this one, and then they get blasted for it.Chason Virgil is a talented young man and will be fine. He has lots of offers and will be able to pick and choose where he wants to go by Thanksgiving. He will still be able to enroll early as well. It’s a setback for him, not the end of the world. Mississippi State isn’t the first school to pull an offer, even as close to his graduation as he is, and they certainly won’t be the last.Published on 11/21/2014 at 10:00 AM CDTLast updated on 11/21/2014 at 10:00 AM CDT was wondering about the stock pile of QB’s we were accumulating.Tiano over Virgil?
