Trip to Lexington, KY with Road Dawg Rob Hataway

By now you know Rob Hataway: Road Dawg. Either from when he ended his iron man streak last year at 162 games or when he gave us tips on how to navigate Baton Rouge for the LSU game. He’s back again with the need to know info on making the trip to Lexington, Kentucky.

The Trip:

"It’s quite a hike, probably a good seven or eight hours from Starkville if you don’t stop very much, but the Kentucky countryside is very, very pretty if you happen to cross it during the daytime. You go through Nashville if you’re looking for a place to stop; and don’t forget Lexington is on Eastern time so you’ll lose an hour if you’re coming from Mississippi."

The Natives:

"Kentucky games are a lot of fun, and that’s primarily because of the Kentucky Football Fan. Kentucky Football Fan generally doesn’t have a really solid grasp of the rules of the game, so they’ll likely boo any calls that go against their team and cheer any calls that go against your team, regardless of the validity of the call. Example: The Derek Pegues “late hit” on Andre Woodson in 2007, notable for being the only time I can remember Sylvester Croom flipping out on a referee. Crowd went wild. Kentucky Football Fan also doesn’t know what your team’s record is, and in the case of Mississippi State, Kentucky Football Fan is unaware that the two schools have played every year since 1990. In general, though, Kentucky Football Fan is fairly nice, and really is just trying to keep busy until basketball starts up."

Parking:

"There’s lots of places along Nicholasville Road close to the stadium to pay to park, or if you don’t mind walking and want to see some of the campus, you can park for free in the parking garage at the UK Medical Center on the west side of campus."

Food:

"There’s a place called Charlie Brown’s in the Chevy Chase section of Lexington, not too far from campus, that is pretty good. It’s basically a small pub atmosphere with pub food, but they do have TV’s on the wall to watch football on Saturdays. Try the fried cheese bites."

Tip:

"Kentucky is also notable for being VERY COLD in late October, particularly if it’s a night game. However you dressed for this past subzero Egg Bowl is how you should prepare to dress at Commonwealth Stadium. I have MSU clothing that was purchased with the specific purpose of being worn in Kentucky."
