Mississippi State has produced both Triple Crown winners in SEC history. First,it was Palmeiro in the 80’s; now, Brent Rooker joins the exclusive club.

Brent Rooker had a very successful 2017 season at Mississippi State. He was named SEC Player of the Year, the first to ever win the award at Mississippi State, and has been awarded first team All-American by many different publications. He was a first round draft pick by the Minnesota Twins and has already had success at the minor league level.

Last night, he officially won the SEC’s Triple Crown, with the college baseball season coming to an end. Rooker is the first player to win the award since 1984, when Rafael Palmeiro won it.

Brent Rooker came into the year with high expectations, and he immediately exceeded them. For much of the season he led the conference in home runs, RBIs, and in batting average. He was hitting over .400 deep into SEC play, until he started slumping heading into postseason play. Rooker ended the year hitting .387 while depositing 23 home runs and driving in 82 RBIs.

One More Award to be Determined

After such a fantastic season, he still has one more award left to win. The Golden Spikes Award, handed out to the best player in the nation, will be decided on Thursday June 29th.

If this season is any indication of what Brent Rooker can do on the baseball field, we will see him win many more awards and also be writing a whole lot about his success. He is the most decorated baseball player to come through this university in a long time and will potentially add to that this week.
