Mississippi State basketball's Darrione Rogers' earns SEC recognition with triple-double
By Ethan Lee
The Southeastern Conference is certainly paying attention to Sam Purcell's Mississippi State basketball team right now. After Mississippi State women's basketball star Darrione Rogers put her name in the Bulldog's record books thanks to a remarkable (and rare) triple-double performance, the SEC has recognized Rogers with SEC Player of the Week honors.
And that's certainly an award she earned. Her all-around dominance and versatility displayed when the Bulldogs faced off against the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes isn't something that is easily replicated.
And thus, the SEC Player of the Week recognition that was presented her way on Tuesday.
Mississippi State basketball: Rare triple-double leads to SEC Player of the Week recognition for Darrione Rogers
In the Bulldogs' victory over Mississippi Valley State, Rogers excelled all over the place as she put up 14 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and dished out 10 assists against the Devilettes. She played a key role as MSU crushed MVSU.
And interestingly enough, this is just the second triple-double to happen in the history of the Mississippi State women's basketball program.
Purcell's Bulldogs are thriving right now and, at 13-2, they look like a solid team that can make some noise in the SEC. It also helps that they've got the kind of talent that can regularly earn SEC Player of the Week honors.
Rogers is the third Bulldog to be named SEC POTW in as many weeks. Lauren Park-Lane earned the recognition after a remarkable barrage of three pointers on Dec. 26 and Jessika Carter was tabbed SEC co-player of the week back on Dec. 19.
For Purcell to have assembled a team of Mississippi State Bulldogs that can routinely rotate who takes over a game is an encouraging thing to see. While the Mississippi State women's basketball team continues to build and move forward, they'll need a well-rounded roster. This Mississippi State basketball team likely isn't where Purcell wants the program to be just yet, but he absolutely has to be proud of what Rogers and the other members of this team are accomplishing.
Triple-doubles don't come around all that often and Rogers definitely deserves this recognition.
