Alabama retakes the throne in the latest SEC power rankings

It appears as though Alabama football is still a problem for everyone else.

That was an awesome weekend of football. We got an instant classic between a pair of SEC titans, a top-10 team getting upset, and another baffling loss for a team already furious with how their season is going. What more could you ask for? All that action has led to shake-ups in my SEC power rankings.

What changes have been made to the power rankings since last week?

SEC power rankings after Week 5

Here's where the power rankings stand after this weekend's incredible action...

1. Alabama Crimson Tide (up from 5)

Welp. It appears Alabama is still Alabama. The Tide nearly choked it away against Georgia, but they got it done in an instant classic. They've rightfully earned their way back on top.

2. Texas Longhorns (down from 1)

Texas overcame a sluggish start to pull away against Mississippi State. This is still an elite team.

3. Tennessee Volunteers

The Vols stay put after a bye week.

4. Georgia Bulldogs (down from 2)

We can't drop a team too much for losing to an elite team on the road by one score, even if they were down 28-0 at one point. But they still looked shaky, and that's one week after surviving against Kentucky. This team is still fantastic, but they've got to fall some.

5. Missouri Tigers (up from 6)

Congrats, Mizzou. You won the bye week (because someone ahead of you fell far).

6. LSU Tigers (up from 7)

Good for LSU to not ever have the game in even the tinniest bit of doubt against a South Alabama team that can score in bunches. That says something positive for their defense, right?

7. Texas A&M Aggies (up from 10)

A&M was probably a bit lucky to win against Arkansas, but regardless, they grinded out a win to move to 4-1 on the year. They've got figure their offense out, but this team is on pace for a big year.

8. South Carolina Gamecocks (up from 11)

Should a team move up three spots on a bye week? Probably not but based on other results and some reevaluation, I've decided to give the Gamecocks a bit more credit.

9. Ole Miss Rebels (down from 4)

ARE THE REBELS TOTAL FRAUDS? MANY PEOPLE ARE ASKING! No, but seriously, that was a pretty bad showing for Ole Miss in their first actual test of the season. Kentucky deserves some credit for being better than we thought, and I don't think the Rebels are actually worse than some of the teams ahead of them. But for a power ranking, they basically have to be here now.

10. Oklahoma Sooners (down from 9)

Oklahoma is 4-1. That counts for something. Oklahoma is also incredibly lucky to have beaten Auburn and still has done nothing to be impressed with them so far.

11. Kentucky Wildcats (up from 12)

Look Kentucky took Georgia to the wire and took down Ole Miss. The South Carolina performance may have just been a bad day. I can't justify moving them up much higher yet, but this seems to be a quality squad.

12. Arkansas Razorbacks (down from 8)

If you're an Arkansas fan, you've got to be kicking yourself because you definitely think this team could be 5-0 right now. And they could. But they aren't because they don't play clean football, thus the harsh fall in the power rankings.

13. Vanderbilt Commodores

Well, Vandy. I hope you enjoyed your bye week because next week, you have to attempt to tackle Jalen Milore. Good luck!

14. Florida Gators

Congrats on your much needed break, Florida. Just a reminder, Billy Napier is still your head coach.

15. Auburn Tigers

Oh, Auburn. Oh, Payton Thorne. Oh, Hugh Freeze. Losing a game you statistically dominated because of a 4th quarter pick-six is just a perfect sign that it ain't your year.

16. Mississippi State Bulldogs

Well, Bulldogs, you didn't get embarrassed. Hanging with Texas for about three quarters was as good as you could ask for. But you're still 1-4.
