The Mississippi State defense has been awful this season. Every team that's faced the Bulldogs has been able to practically score at will, and that didn't change on Saturday when the Bulldogs faced Arkansas. The Razorbacks put up 58 points and 673 yards.
It was a rough day...

After this performance, the Mississippi State defense is now allowing 36.4 points per game and 477.6 yards per game. There' s a very real chance that they could be, statistically, the worst defense in school history.
And after watching eight games of the 2024 Bulldog defense, Mississippi State fans are demanding that a necessary change be made in Starkville.
Mississippi State fans don't want to see Coleman Hutzler coach another down
Bulldog defensive coordinator Coleman Hutzler has, understandably, been subject to harsh criticism throughout the season. His defense has been ridiculously painful to watch. This was a pretty good description for what it's like to endure watching the Bulldogs defense as a fan...
My older brothers would play me 2 on 1 in football in the backyard and run the read option. They scored every play. Thats what watching this defense feels like.

There's been lots of debate of where this defense ranks all-time in Starkville. Is it the worst ever? Is it worst than the 2016 Peter Sirmon-led defense? It sure looks like it.
I wasn’t prepared to say he’s worse than Sirmon but after a 58-spot to Arkansas I think it’s fair to pass the torch. Coleman Hutzler, you are public enemy #1. pic.twitter.com/DiIiRYenLU

Seemingly every week, QBs who have been having rough seasons go for career days against this State defense, and it's largely because they leave wide open receivers for them to throw to. That made the Starkville PD's gameday traffic update all the more painfully fitting...

Which it's not just leaving receivers open. There's nothing this defense does well. literally nothing. And that begs the question of what exactly Hutzler is doing out there.
No pass rush

No run defense
Receivers running wide open
I mean, what are paying our defensive coordinator for?
Something has to change. State can't go on like this on defense, and it starts at the top. It's time to make a move.
I will never talk about another man’s job.

But
Someone needs to be fired
Look, you can make a fair argument that given the lack of talent on the defensive roster that Coleman Hutzler inherited and the injuries plaguing the defensive front, that he was put in an impossible situation where even a successful, veteran defensive coordinator would've struggled to field even an average defense at State this season.
And don't get me wrong, I tend to think that even if Nick Saban were in charge, this defense would be bad this season. But there's a big difference between merely being bad and being one of the very worst units in the nation. The frequency at which this defense is entirely out of position and can't make routine plays suggests its more than just a talent problem.
A change is necessary. And honestly, Jeff Lebby's tenure may depend on it.
