Mississippi State football is taking on an in-state opponent in the Alcorn State Braves from the FCS ranks. The Bulldogs, coming off their big upset of a ranked Arizona State squad, are, as you can expect, rolling. It's already a 28-0 game early in the second quarter.

It's hard to take too much stock in games like these against heavily-outmatched opponents, but there are things to watch for. Games like these are a perfect opportunity for young talent to get valuable reps, gain experience, and show why they deserve more playing time for the future. There's no young talent that Mississippi State fans want to see more than true freshman QB Kamario Taylor.

The Macon, MS product is the highest-rated QB signee in program history. The Bulldogs have never had a more naturally talented and physically gifted QB on campus, and after an impressive showing in the spring game, the Maroon and White faithful have been anxious to see him take the field.

Taylor has seen some snaps as a short-yardage runner this season, but today's matchup with Alcorn State is his first chance to see extension playing time. And Jeff Lebby didn't waste any time getting him involved.

On Mississippi State's third drive of the game, Taylor took the field alongside starter Blake Shapen in a 2-QB package. First, Taylor was used as a decoy, with WR Anthony Evans III getting the ball on a reverse for a big gain. But one play later, Taylor got to be the star.

Taylor, lined up at RB, took a toss from Shapen, rolled out to his right, and threw a flat-footed dart in the face of pressure to a streaking Brenen Thompson for a 42-yard score. You could not ask for a better outcome than your first career pass going for a big TD.

Obviously it was a trick play against a bad team, but plays like this are precisely why folks are so excited to see Kamario Taylor going forward. That's an impressive throw, showing off the arm talent that makes him so special. And given the way this game is going early on, it's safe to assume Taylor will get plenty more chances to show what he's capable of this evening.
