Mississippi State football got hit with a massive injury during their contest with the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs. Safety Isaac Smith left the game with a leg injury in the second quarter.

Smith came up limping after a Georgia play and ultimately had to be helped off the field. Shortly after, he was seen being carried into the locker room. He had recorded two tackles and had a huge fumble recovery to prevent Georgia from reaching the endzone before exiting the game.

There was some doubt as to whether or not Isaac Smith would see the field against Georgia. He showed up on the availability report on Thursday as "Probable" and was considered a "Game Time Decision" going on Saturday morning.

Smith was clearly good enough to play after going through warmups, and he looked to be his normal self during the game. But sadly, the injury bug bit in a game where the Bulldogs badly need him to be on the field.

Tony Mitchell will have to step up for Mississippi State vs Georgia with Isaac Smith out

Isaac Smith exiting is a massive loss for Mississippi State. The hard-hitting safety is a tackling machine. He led the SEC with 127 tackles in 2024 and was coming off his best game of the year, posting 11 stops against Arkansas a week ago. His performance early against Georgia suggests he was in for another strong day.

With him out of the game, the Bulldogs will have to turn to junior Tony Mitchell. Mitchell is in his first year with the program and was a major signee for Mississippi State in the 2025 signing class. He was a 4-star prospect and the No. 1 JUCO safety in the country according to 247 Sports. The Alabama-native started his career at Alabama and was one of the top safety prospects in the country coming out of high school. He spent last season playing at East Mississippi CC.

State will need him at his best against Georgia. With the way UGA runs the football and involves their tight ends in the passing game, Mitchell will find himself right in the middle of the action frequently.
