Mississippi State baseball entered the season with sky high expectations. The Diamond Dawgs, led by first year HC Brian O'Connor and fielding what looked to be a deep and talented roster, were a consensus Top 6 team in the preseason. And they looked the part early in the year, rolling through their competition.
But through their first nine games, they went without facing any opponent of significance, making State's true quality level unclear. That changed over the weekend, as the Diamond Dawgs went to Arlington for the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series where they would face a trio of power conference opponents in Arizona State, Virginia Tech, and No. 1 UCLA. How MSU performed in Texas would say a lot about how good they truly are.
Well, we can now say confidently that this Diamond Dawgs team is legit. Mississippi State experienced a 2-1 weekend at Globe Life Field, handling Arizona State 8-4, whipping up on Virginia Tech in a 15-8 game that wasn't as close as the score suggests, and then coming up just short to the Bruins in an 8-7 loss in extra innings.
The loss to top-ranked UCLA certainly stung. Between a blown ninth-inning lead with two outs, an unfortunate ground-rule double preventing the winning run from coming home, and a terrible missed ball four call that would've walked the winning run home, State really should have won.
But even in defeat, in what was as good a college baseball game as you'll see, MSU proved they're firmly in the conversation as a national title contender.
Mississippi State undoutedly one of college baseball's best in 2026
Among the biggest reasons for optimism with this Mississippi State team was the depth of talent in the lineup, and that's been on full display through 12 games. State is one of the nation's best with a team batting average of .350, a slugging percentage of .587, and 38 doubles hit. Six players with at least 15 at-bats are hitting .400 or better. 10 at hitting at least .333. Nine have an OPS of at least 1.000.
But the Bulldogs have impressed on the mound too. Their 136 strikeouts is one of the best marks in the nation. Their 3.63 team ERA and 1.13 team WHIP are both impressive. Starting pitching has been strong, and while they're still settling things in the bullpen, it's not from a lack of quality relievers.
State obviously has things to shore up. Base-running has been a glaring weakness, and against UCLA specifically, they issued far too many free passes to Bruin batters (though that hasn't been a regular occurrence). But that is correctable, and overall, this is as complete a team as there is nationally. There's no doubting the Diamond Dawgs at this point. This is a fantastic ballclub.
