Mississippi State baseball fans rejoiced over the weekend when it was announced that all-time great Diamond Dawg Jake Mangum was finally getting his opportunity in the big leagues. The SEC's all-time hits leader spent the last six years griding his way through minor league ball, anxiously waiting to get his shot in the majors.
On Sunday, he made his MLB debut, getting the start for the Tampa Bay Rays. Mangum had a bit of a quiet first game, going 0-3 with a walk (though he was robbed of an extra-base hit in his first ever at-bat thanks to a spectacular catch). Jake was back in action Monday night in Tampa as the Rays took on the Pittsburgh Pirates. And he showed precisely why his call-up was long overdue.
Former Mississippi State Bulldog Jake Mangum has breakout performance for Tampa Bay Rays
Jake Mangum looked like the superstar Mississippi State fans have always known him to be in his second MLB game. The crafty switch-hitter went a perfect 4-4 the plate in Tampa Bay's 6-1 win over the Pirates, notching three singles, a double, two runs batted in, two stolen bases, and a run scored. He, obviously, was the Rays' Player of the Game.

Jake's first ever major league hit could not have been more perfect. In the bottom of the third, he knocked a single through the six-hole, the exact hit we saw him produce so many times during his Bulldog career.

And if a single through the left side wasn't fitting enough, Mangum followed that up by stealing second base. Oh, and at second base for the Pirates? That'd be former Mississippi State Bulldog Adam Frazier. It was just a Maroon and White kinda night down in Tampa Bay.

Later in the bottom of the fourth, Jake would head to the plate with a pair of runners in scoring position. He'd hit another single, this time past second base, to bring home both runners, extend the Rays' lead to 4-0, and record his first two major league RBI.

Two hits, a stolen base, and a pair of RBI would have been plenty to make this a fantastic outing for The Mayor. But he wasn't done! In the bottom of the sixth, Mangum would show off his switch-hitting ability, batting righty and sending the ball into deep right-center for a ground rule double. He'd come around to score later in the inning, making the game 5-0.

And for the icing on the cake, with chants of "MAN-GUM" from the crowd in the background, Jake fired a single down the first base line in the bottom of the eight. That's a perfect 4-4 in just his second career start.

Oh, and then he stole second again because of course he did.

Anyone who's followed Jake Mangum's career knew this is exactly what he was capable of. All he needed was the opportunity. He finally got it, and he made the most of it. Have yourself a night, Mr. Mayor.
