A new Bulldog alum is a Super Bowl champion. Cornerback Darius Slay, who played two seasons in Starkville in 2011 and 2012, and the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the two-time reigning champion Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX Sunday night.
Darius Slay becomes the 26th different Mississippi State alum to win a Super Bowl, a part of 30 total rings won by former Bulldogs.
Darius Slay helped shut down Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs
The story of Super Bowl LIX was home dominant the Philadelphia Eagles' defense was against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs offense. Kansas City's pedestrian 275 yards and 22 points do not at all tell the story for how they performed Sunday night. The Eagles shut them down.
Darius Slay and the Philly defense didn't let the Chiefs do anything. Prior to their first scoring drive late in the third quarter (while down 34-0), Patrick Mahomes had just 61 yards passing. Much of that goes back to the Eagles' pass rush, which got quick pressure all night. But Slay and the secondary weren't giving up easy yards either. His side of the ball was elite against the league's top passer.
Former Mississippi State Bulldog Darius Slay has put together a stellar NFL career
Darius Slay has been one of the top cornerbacks in all of football since going to the NFL in 2013. The former Bulldog is a six-time Pro Bowler and one-time 1st Team All-Pro. In 2017 he led the NFL in interceptions. Now, he's got the ultimate achievement, adding a Super Bowl ring to his resume.
The win gives Slay an argument as an all-time great in Philly. He's made three Pro Bowls as an Eagle, and having been a starter on one of the franchise's two Super Bowl teams, his he's the only corner in Eagles' history to both win a Super Bowl and make a Pro Bowl in Philly.
