Elite former Mississippi State defensive lineman named a 2024 SEC Legend
Over the weekend, Mississippi State fans got the chance to look back on a group of legendary Bulldogs when the alums of the 2014 football team were honored at Davis Wade Stadium. Now another all-time great Bulldog, one who helped lay a foundation in Starkville that the 2014 team would later build off of, is being recognized as one of the bet players in SEC football history.
Mississippi State Bulldogs alum Fletcher Cox named 2024 SEC Legend
On Tuesday, the SEC announced their 2024 SEC Legends class, honoring one former football star from each of the league's 16 institutions. Representing Mississippi State was dominant defensive lineman and all-time great Bulldog Fletcher Cox.
Few Mississippi State football stars have had as successful a collegiate and professional career as Fletcher Cox. The Yazoo City, MS native was a 4-star recruit in State's 2009 signing class, a group that would lay the foundation for Dan Mullen's program in Starkville.
In 2010, Cox would emerge as one of the best players on the roster, helping lead the Bulldogs to the program's first nine-win season in over a decade. In 2011, he would breakout as one of the very best defensive lineman in the nation, earning both 1st Team All-SEC and 1st Team All-American honors.
In the 2012 NFL Draft, Fletcher Cox was drafted in the 1st Round, 12th overall, by the Philadelphia Eagles. Cox spent over a decade in Philly, during which time he became one of the NFL's very best defensive lineman. Cox, who retired from the NFL earlier this year, finished his career as a six-time Pro Bowler, a one-time first-team All Pro, and a Super Bowl champion.
Fletcher Cox is one of the very best players to come through Starkville, and he helped start a run of Bulldog defensive lineman taking over the NFL during the past decade. He's a big reason why Mississippi State has a strong argument as being "D-Line U". Now he gets to be immortalized forever in SEC history. Cox and the rest of the 2024 SEC Legends class honored in Atlanta on December 6-7 at the College Football Hall of Fame and the SEC Championship Game.
