Mississippi State football: Jeff Lebby comments on QB situation in Starkville
By Ethan Lee
As Jeff Lebby discussed the future of the quarterback position for the Mississippi State football team, MSU’s head coach was complimentary of the Bulldogs’ QBs.
It’s pretty clear that new Mississippi State football coach Jeff Lebby has a desire to add a dual threat quarterback via the transfer portal so his offense has a better shot of operating at a higher level sooner rather than later.
But even though the Mississippi State Bulldogs might pursue some new athletes to add to the MSU football roster thanks to the transfer portal, that doesn’t mean Lebby isn’t also already excited about the options that are already in the locker room in Starkville.
During his introductory press conference Monday evening, MSU’s head coach was asked about the quarterback position and how he planned to move forward with the Bulldogs.
“We also have got a couple of guys on campus that i am incredibly excited about to be able to put us in a position to go compete and have a healthy competition this spring,” Lebby explained.
Even though Will Rogers has entered the transfer portal, there are still some quarterbacks of note on campus in Starkville. While Chris Parson is a fan favorite, Mike Wright’s connection to Jeff Lebby is intriguing.

Wright, a quarterback who started his college career with the Vanderbilt Commodores, seems to have had a shot to go play for the UCF Knights while Lebby was in Orlando. When looking at Wright’s recruiting profile, one will find that Wright was offered by UCF and that it was believed the Knights had a real shot at landing him.
Now, that doesn’t mean that Wright, at this stage in his career, is a great fit for the offense that Lebby runs. I’d feel a bit better about that if Lebby had 2-3 additional years to work with Wright and help him refine his passing skills.
Which makes Parson an interesting prospect for playing in this system.
This isn’t the Air Raid that Parson signed up to play in, but it’s an offense that will feature plenty of throwing and a ton of fun. And it would utilize Parson’s athleticism as well. He’s likely still a little too fresh to really thrust into starting in the SEC full time, but with some time it’s possible he will be able to thrive in this system.
Lebby wants a dual threat quarterback to play in his offense. It’ll be interesting to see who ends up coming to campus and who ends up winning the starting job for MSU.
