As the Mississippi State football team starts looking towards its future and a new era, MSU AD Zac Selmon has made a strong statement about the future.

Fresh off of a 17-7 loss to Ole Miss in the 2023 Egg Bowl, the Mississippi State football team now needs a new head coach. The man in charge of finding that new head football coach sure seems to be excited about the future of the MSU football program.

At 5-7, this season has been remarkably disappointing. MSU won nine games a season ago. Despite that, and despite the fact that MSU brought back a significant amount of talent and experience on the offensive side of the ball, first year head coach Zach Arnett struggled to find success.

Much of that can be attributed to the changes he made with MSU’s offense and the way he gutted the staff on that side of the ball.

But it sounds like Zac Selmon, MSU’s athletics director, seems to believe brighter days are ahead for this football program. According to a tweet/post on Twitter/X, Selmon noted that the “best is yet to come” for MSU football.

Which, that seems a little bold, to be completely honest. But it’s probably a good thing that he’s thinking big. It’d be concerning if he wasn’t.

Mississippi State football coaching search: Zac Selmon seems to believe brighter days are ahead for the Bulldogs

In his post, Selmon thanks the Mississippi State football players and coaching staff for “relentless working to add to the storied tradition of MSU football.” And while he noted that things haven’t been easy, MSU football players have shown up consistently.

And Selmon made it clear that he’s grateful for that.

It’s the ending of his statement that I find to be particularly bold. The Mississippi State coaching search has been winding and briefly chaotic. Right now, it’s hard to tell who will lead the Bulldogs moving forward.

While some candidates (Jamey Chadwell, Willie Fritz, Jon Sumrall, Rhett Lashlee, etc.) have been exciting, theoretical options like Jeff Lebby and Barry Odom are less inspiring for various reasons.

Selmon seems to be a bright mind and an innovative leader. It’ll be interesting to see who he brings in and entrusts the Mississippi State football program with.
