Underrated Big 12 matchup: Texas Tech at West Virginia

2:30 PM CT on ESPN+

No coach came into the season on a hotter seat than West Virginia’s Neal Brown. But he’s made some strides towards potentially saving himself. The Mountaineers are 2-1. They put up more of a fight against Penn State than many expected, and taking down rival Pitt at home in the Backyard Brawl did a lot to help Brown’s job security.

Texas Tech, on the other hand, is dealing with a tougher start than anticipated in a season with high expectations. After winning eight games in Joey McGuire’s first season, many dubbed the Red Raiders a darkhorse Big 12 contender. But they were stunned in overtime to open the season at Wyoming and then lost a heartbreaker at home to Oregon.

WVU has failed to ever really take-off offensively under Neal Brown, but they may have found an identity to lean on. They’ve got a strong OL, good RB in CJ Donaldson, and both QB options are mobile. They can run the football, and that could prove successful against a Tech defense that has been suspect against the run.

But Tech’s Air Raid attack should present some problems for the Mountaineer’s defense, too.

West Virginia may be building up just a bit of momentum, and Tech is desperate to get their season back on track. That could create a fun battle in Morgantown.
