College football schedule week 1: South Carolina Gamecocks football vs. North Carolina Tar Heels football

The South Carolina Gamecocks are really trying to build some momentum and get this program into a space where it’s no longer just in the middle class of the SEC. That’s a tough task. About a decade ago, South Carolina was one of the best programs in the SEC East. That success is hard to sustain and that’s not where the Gamecocks are right now.

But, as Shane Beamer continues to build this program, he’s doing it fairly successfully. The Gamecocks shocked some top 5 teams a season ago and now the Gamecocks have a chance to start the season with a ranked win as they face the North Carolina Tar Heels.

North Carolina, meanwhile, is adjusting to life without Phil Longo as their offensive coordinator. While some Tar Heels weren’t fond of how fast his offense put up points, it’s hard to argue that he’s able to craft incredibly dynamic schemes that enable teams to be great. And because of Longo’s offense, the Tar Heels won more than a few games.

To replace Longo, Mack Brown turned to Chip Lindsey, who has been learning from Gus Malzahn. While Lindsey isn’t Longo by any stretch of the imagination and Malzahn’s offense is radically different from the Air Raid, it’s an interesting attempt to move the Tar Heels forward.

Which of these teams will come out on top? I don’t know, but I’m intrigued. I’m very intrigued. This sort of regional, non-conference matchup is always great to see and while I’m not always a proponent of neutral site games, this one makes a lot of sense. I’m here for it.
