Mississippi State football: Will Rogers receives Walter Camp award watch list recognition
By Ethan Lee
Mississippi State football’s start quarterback Will Rogers keeps earning recognition from preseason award watch lists. This time, he’s made the Walter Camp Player Of The Year watch list.
Another 2023 preseason award watch list, another spot for Mississippi State football quarterback Will Rogers. That’s right, the Bulldogs’ stellar quarterback has received even more preseason award recognition.
Now, Rogers is receiving attention from the Walter Camp Player of the Year award watch list ahead of the 2023 Mississippi State football season.
There are a number of prestigious college football awards and it can be hard to keep up with all of them. It wouldn’t be hard to get this award confused with some of the others where Rogers is receiving recognition.
The Walter Camp Player of the Year award, apparently one of the oldest college football awards around, has recognized a total of 45 players for its watch list ahead of the season.
And that includes Mississippi State’s starting quarterback.
Mississippi State football: Will Rogers gets Walter Camp Player of the Year award recognition ahead of 2023 season
Rogers has spent his Mississippi State football career shattering program records and becoming one of the most productive quarterbacks in Southeastern Conference history. Ahead of the 2023 season, Rogers has the eighth most passing yards in a career in SEC history (10,689 yards), the eighth most touchdown passes in SEC history (82), and has thrown for over 300 passing yards in 18 games he’s played in.
Rogers is rewriting the record book in Starkville and scribbling his name all over the SEC record book as well.
It’s not a surprise that the Walter Camp Player of the Year award would pay attention to MSU’s quarterback.
The list will be down to10 semi-finalists once November rolls around and it’ll be fascinating to see if Rogers is still on the list by that point. If he can routinely play up to his potential (as well as overcome the hurdle of playing in a new offense), it’s hard to imagine that he won’t at least be in the conversation.
But that’s a long ways away. We’ll see how things play out as we go forward.
