Ahead of the 2023 Mississippi State football season, Will Rogers is earning some respect for the 2023 Manning Award preseason watch list.
All throughout his Mississippi State football career up to this point, Will Rogers has shattered school records and put up absurd stats. And because of all he’s accomplished (and his potential heading into the 2023 Mississippi State football season), Rogers is a pretty good candidate for the 2023 Manning Award preseason watch list.
The offense is changing, but there’s plenty of evidence that Rogers can perform at a high level in the SEC when he’s playing up to his full potential. And the folks over at the Manning Award, which is sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, have taken notice.
So far, Rogers boasts over 10,689 passing yards, has completed 1,159 passes, tossed 82 touchdown passes, and he still has another season ahead of him.
And because of all of that, Rogers is among the 33 quarterbacks to make the list.
Mississippi State football: Will Rogers recognized by Manning Award Watch List heading into 2023 season
It makes sense that Rogers would be named amongst some of the best quarterbacks in the country. After all, he’s thrown the eighth most passing yards in SEC history. With a decent season in 2023, Rogers could very easily own that record, surpassing the likes of Danny Wuerffel, Peyton Manning, and Aaron Murray (as well as other SEC legends) along the way.
It remains to be seen if Rogers will set that record or bring the Manning Award back to Starkville this season.
Following Mike Leach’s tragic death and the hire of offensive coordinator Kevin Barbay, it’s unclear exactly what MSU’s offense will look like this coming season. But, if Barbay is able to play to the strengths of this roster and Rogers is able to adapt effectively to the new scheme, then you could see Rogers continue his excellent career by posting up more impressive stats this season.
And this Mississippi State football season keeps getting closer and closer. Rogers and the Bulldogs will get things started against the Southeastern Louisiana Lions on September 2.
