Meet the South Carolina Gamecocks, the fourth team the Mississippi State football team will face
If you’re not familiar with the Gamecocks, fret not. Let’s get you up to speed with this quick primer of the South Carolina football program.
Located in Columbia, South Carolina, the University of South Carolina first started playing football all the way back in 1892. The Gamecocks host their home games at Williams-Brice Stadium, which allows for over 77,000 fans to show up for a game.
And all of those fans are going to be jumping and waving towels and screaming and enjoying an old song. But because those fans are intense and invested, Williams-Brice Stadium features a rather intimidating atmosphere for visitors.
South Carolina fast facts:
- Town: Columbia, SC
- Home stadium: Williams-Brice Stadium
- Mascot: Cocky the Gamecock
- Student enrollment: Over 33,000
- 2022 record: 8-5

The Gamecocks have had some bright moments, but they’re far from a blue blood. Like the Mississippi State Bulldogs, this is a team with a fair bit of potential and some intense fan support. And South Carolina could certainly be pretty good this season.
They’re hoping to establish themselves as contenders in the SEC East that was challenging a season ago.
We’ll see how far Beamer can take the Gamecocks in his third season at South Carolina.
