Former Mississippi State football coach on Texas Sports Hall of Fame ballot
By Ethan Lee
One of the greatest coaches in Mississippi State football history is getting some very notable recognition by being on the Texas Sports Hall of Fame Ballot.
The Texas Sports Hall of Fame and its voters might end up recognizing a former Mississippi State football coach here in the relatively near future. One of the greatest to ever coach in Starkville is currently on the 2024 ballot for the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
And that’d be Jackie Sherrill.
Many Mississippi State football fans are very familiar with Sherrill and his legacy. He’s the only coach to take the Mississippi State Bulldogs to Atlanta to compete in the SEC Championship Game. He’s one of a handful of coaches who has truly made a positive mark on MSU football history.
And he’s won more games than any other coach in MSU football history.
But none of that is why the former Alabama Crimson Tide football player and MSU football coach is on the ballot for the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, of course.

Nope, before Sherrill coached in Starkville he actually led another Maroon-clad team. The Texas A&M Aggies owe a fair bit of success to Sherrill’s leadership as well. And because of his time in Aggieland, Sherrill is now up for consideration for the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
Sherrill has already been inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame for all of his impressive accomplishments. It seems likely that he’ll be picked to get into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame as well.
It’d be truly shocking if he didn’t end up in the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. With the Aggies, Sherrill won 52 games across 7 seasons and that includes a couple Cotton Bowls. Add in three Southwest Conference titles for the Aggies under Sherrill’s guidance and that sure seems like a noteworthy, Hall of Fame worthy sort of career.
