Mississippi State Football: What happened on Saturday night vs. Auburn?
By Landon Young
The Mississippi State football team escaped with a win on Saturday night vs. the Auburn Tigers. The final score was 39-33 with a game-ending touchdown in overtime from Woody Marks. After Saturday’s win, the Bulldogs are now bowl-eligible with a 6-3 record.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs had a great start to the game and went into halftime with a 24-6 lead. The Mississippi State football team looked as if they had prepared to dominate the Auburn Tigers in all aspects of the game.
The second half was a much different story for the Mississippi State football team. The Bulldogs struggled to move the ball offensively and only produced nine points in the second half. The Bulldog defense began to tire out and could not manage to get the Auburn offense off the field. The Bulldog defense allowed 27 points in the second half.
Will Rogers threw the ball 59 times and completed 42 of those attempts for 357 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Woody Marks started strong and finished with 7 carries for 45 yards and a rushing touchdown to win in overtime.
This was a game that many prior Mississippi State football teams would have lost, but the fight that this year’s team had late in the game was impressive. Of course, the second-half performance was disappointing, but the fact that the Bulldogs pulled out an SEC West victory in overtime is always a big deal. Saturday’s win was a ticket to Mississippi State’s 13th straight bowl appearance. Mississippi State, Alabama, and Georgia are the only three SEC teams to accomplish 13 straight bowl games.
