Mississippi State football is off to a 3-1 start through the first four weeks of the college football season. The Mississippi State Bulldogs won their first two games of the season vs. non-conference opponents, lost to the LSU Tigers in week 3, and dominated the Bowling Green Falcons in week 4. The Bulldogs bounced back to the win column this past Saturday in Davis Wade Stadium vs. the Bowling Green Falcons, 45-14.

Thoughts about the 2022 Mississippi State football team can change weekly, just ask Brian Hadad from Thunder and Lightning. Here is the report card for the Mississippi State Bulldogs through the first four weeks of college football:

Offense – A-

Will Rogers did exactly what he needed to do on Saturday vs. the Bowling Green Falcons. Rogers finished with 409 yards and 6 touchdowns through the air. Those 6 passing touchdowns ties Will Rogers’ high for most touchdown passes in a single game. I give the offense an A- only because of the couple of dropped balls that could have resulted in big plays. Mississippi State has to fix that if they expect to win big SEC games.

Defense – B+

The defense did really well on Saturday, but there were certainly some holes in the secondary. I think the front seven did a fantastic job the entire game, but the secondary let many plays get behind them. It seems as if the secondary could find many turnovers if the defensive backs would turn around when the ball is thrown to the wide receiver. The Bulldogs should have come away with several interceptions on Saturday’s game, but instead just came away with one. There was one play where the Bulldogs did come away with an interception, but it was called back for defensive holding. I give the defense a B+ because they only allowed 14 points, but there were a few plays where I questioned why we could not stop the Falcons’ offense.

Special Teams – A+

A 52-yard field goal, are you kidding me?!?! Not only did that happen, but Mississippi State was perfect on extra points on Saturday. That shouldn’t be exciting, but it is if you have followed Mississippi State football this 2022 season. I give the Mississippi State special teams an A+ because they were perfect in all aspects of the game this week. Great job.
