Mississippi State Football: Friends With the Enemy
By Landon Young
Mississippi State football hosts the Bowling Green Falcons this Saturday. The game will kick off at 11:00 a.m. CT at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, Mississippi. The Bulldogs come into this game 2-1, and the Falcons at 1-2.
To learn more about the Bowling Green Falcons, I met up with Mitch from Bowling Green Football Talk. Mitch is in software development and lives in Arizona. He decided to apply to Bowling Green because his brother randomly used them in dynasty mode on the NCAA football video game.
Welcome to Maroon and White Nation! I’d first like to ask, how are you feeling about your football team’s expectations for the 2022 season?
Going into the year, my expectations were 5 to 7 wins. I like to pick a 3 win window for my projections. Anything more and it’s too easy. This team has the roster to make a bowl and end our drought but the schedule isn’t easy. It’s year 4 of the Loeffler era so a bowl game is the expectation as we were in ruins when he took over.
Are you guys better than Notre Dame? You know since you beat Marshall and all.
Heck yeah, we’re better than Notre Dame! In all seriousness, it was the biggest statement of resiliency and heart I’ve seen in my bowling green fandom. This team lost to an FCS school, we haven’t made a bowl since 2015. Now a team that just spanked No. 8 Notre Dame goes up 14-0 in 90 seconds. Instead of packing it in, this team fought and clawed to an OT victory.
Our fans don’t know a lot about your team. Who are your playmakers? Offensive and defensive.
Some things to know about Bowling Green. A very fun college town, with 20 bars within two miles of each other. Football-wise, first MAC school to host Gameday back in 2003. Urban Meyer’s first head coaching job. Our playmakers on offense are Matt McDonald the QB and transfer wide receivers CJ Lewis and OJ Hilaire have been massive. On defense, DL Karl Brooks, DB Jordan Anderson, and LB DJ Taylor are studs.
We like to pass the ball a lot here at Mississippi State. How are you guys at defending the pass?
Pass defense this year has been shaky. The defense will likely round into form in MAC play but if Mississippi State struggles to throw the ball id be worried if I were y’all.
What’s your prediction for Saturday’s game? Score and thoughts.
Hard to predict scores. I never thought this team would pull off an upset last week but our offensive line is very injured, and Mississippi State always has dudes in the trenches. Given the injuries and MAC playing starting next week, it could get ugly if the Bulldogs want to run up on somebody after the LSU loss.
