Mississippi State football recruiting: JaVonta Payton picks Bulldogs

Joe Moorhead and the Mississippi State football team added another junior college prospect to the Bulldogs’ roster by getting JaVonta Payton to sign with State.

Joe Moorhead’s offense has a huge need for wide receivers that can be reliable pass catching targets. The Mississippi State football team is hoping that JaVonta Payton of Hermitage, Tennessee can be that for the Bulldogs.

Payton just signed his letter of intent to join the Mississippi State football team and he is joining the 2019 Mississippi State signing class from Northwest Community College. As a three-star recruit, Payton is ranked as the No. 28 junior college recruit in the country during this recruiting cycle. He also happens to be ranked as the No. 4 junior college prospect from the state of Tennessee.

And at 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, JaVonta Payton could certainly become a solid deep threat pass catching option for the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the future. Given how Mississippi State’s wide receiver corps has looked in recent years, that could be really good for Joe Moorhead’s offense.

Payton will have an opportunity to get onto the field sooner rather than later given his experience and talent.

Mississippi State’s newest wide receiver coach, Michael Johnson, is the primary recruiter being credited with getting Payton to Starkville. The Mississippi State Bulldogs beat out Tennessee (who was seemingly heavily favored to get Payton), Ole Miss, Kentucky, Middle Tennessee, North Carolina, Southern Miss, and Austin Peay.

Getting JaVonta Payton to come to Starkville over the Vols, Rebels, Wildcats, Tar Heels, and others is an impressive feat for Mississippi State’s newest wide receiver coach. The Bulldogs badly needed Payton to sign with State and Michael Johnson apparently came through for MSU.
