Maurice Smitherman tweets support for Mississippi State football after ejection
By Ethan Lee
The Mississippi State football team will have to finish the Outback Bowl without one of its best defensive backs. That didn’t stop Maurice Smitherman from showing support for the Bulldogs and voicing frustration about his ejection.
The Outback Bowl has been an up and down experience for the Mississippi State football team. MSU hasn’t been able to really put Iowa away early and it’s because the Hawkeyes are pretty good, but also MSU has made several mistakes. The Bulldogs have struggled with penalties at times and, well, it has cost them quite a bit against the Iowa Hawkeyes.
And there’s one penalty in particular that Maurice Smitherman would certainly love back.
With the Bulldogs up 6-0 on the Iowa Hawkeyes early in the second quarter of the Outback Bowl, Mississippi State’s junior defensive back was tagged with a targeting penalty, and was then subsequently ejected.
And after being ejected, Smitherman took to twitter to voice his disagreement with the penalty while also expressing support for his teammates:

It was literally minutes after Smitherman was ejected to when he tweeted, and it’s perfect. He obviously wasn’t going to be given a chance to get back on the field after preparing for a month and there’s no way that he’d be able to discuss his concerns with the refs, so he took advantage of a platform that he has.
It’s a bummer that Smitherman won’t be able to finish this game with his teammates and friends, but it’s understandable given the penality and the consequences that go with that penalty.
At the moment, the Mississippi State football team is currently leading Iowa. The Bulldogs have struggled with the Hawkeyes and penalties have dragged MSU down. The first half was rough, but State has scored 13 unanswered points and leads 19-17 in the third quarter. Hopefully the Bulldogs can close this game out with the lead and, as Smitherman said, “send [the] seniors out the right way.”
