The 2018 Mississippi State football season could be one fans will remember for years to come. Who will need to step up to make that happen?

As we approach the 2018 Mississippi State football season, we’ll be looking at the players who will need to step up in a big way for the Bulldogs to turn the season into the one the fans are hoping for. This article will focus on one of the players who sometimes gets overshadowed by his fellow teammates on the defensive side of the football, Gerri Green

When your teammates are Jeffery Simmons, a likely first round pick in the NFL Draft, and Montez Sweat, the SEC leader in sacks, then there is a pretty decent chance you won’t get some of the publicity those guys get. Sure, Mississippi State football fans are well aware of what Gerri Green did in 2017, but outside the fan base, it will be a lot harder to find people familiar with Green’s production.

If you don’t remember what Green did a season ago, or you weren’t paying as close attention, Green put up incredible numbers when Todd Grantham used him as an Outside Linebacker in his 3-4 scheme. Green’s primary responsibility was to be an edge rusher and get after the quarterback while keeping containment in the running game. In 2017, Green had 38 tackles, 11 for loss, 5 sacks, and 1 84 yard interception return for a touchdown against Kentucky. It was an impressive year.

Green is being converted to a 4-3 defensive end with the same basic responsibilities he had last year. Montez Sweat and Jeffery Simmons will draw the attention of most defensive coordinators. Those two players will likely draw mast of the opposing offensive lines’ double teams. If that is the case, Gerri Green could put up huge numbers and make serious name for himself on a defense that could be one of the best the Mississippi State football team has ever had.
