For the third straight year, the Governor’s Cup is coming home to Starkville

Mississippi State baseball just did it again! The Bulldogs beat the Ole Miss Rebels for the third time this season. It also happens to be the third straight Governor’s Cup that MSU has won. The Bulldogs came from behind and beat Ole Miss on a walk off home run!

After a pair of scoreless innings, Ole Miss struck first with a RBI double in the 3rd inning. But, MSU took the lead in the bottom half of the inning with a two-RBI double from Jake Mangum, pushing MSU ahead 2-1.

The scoring continued on into 4th inning as the Rebels hit a two-run homer. But, Mississippi State tied things back up again at 3-3 with a ground rule double from Elijah MacNamee. Unfortunately, Ole Miss scored again in the 5th inning and MSU didn’t respond, putting the Rebels up 4-3.

Marshall Gilbert didn’t let the Rebels stay ahead for too long, however. His solo home run in the bottom of the 7th inning tied things up. Then, one inning later, Jordan Westburg flew out but got a run across the plate, giving MSU a 5-4 lead.

Things were looking pretty good at this point for Mississippi State. That is until Ole Miss hit a pair of doubles in the top of the 9th inning to get a 6-5 lead. Then, well, things didn’t look so good.

Mississippi State didn’t falter though.

After Ole Miss walked Jake Mangum to put two runners on base, Luke Alexander ended the game with a two run double to send Ole Miss home and keep the Governor’s Cup in Starkville for the third-consecutive year.

Mississippi State is now sitting at 37 in RPI rankings. That’s pretty good for a team without any sort of consistency or a head coach. Now, the Bulldogs just have to get enough wins down the stretch to get in good standing for postseason play.
