Mississippi State Basketball Takes Down North Carolina State 71-57 in the Sweet Sixteen

Vic Schaefer and the Mississippi State basketball team is moving on in the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs bested the North Carolina State Wolfpack in the Sweet Sixteen tonight. Now, for the second year in a row, MSU is headed to the Elite Eight.

In Kansas City tonight, Teaira McCowan took the game over and gave the Bulldogs a commanding performance. McCowan posted yet another double-double against the Wolfpack, scoring 24 points on a perfect 11 for 11 shooting and then pulling down 15 rebounds.

McCowan’s performance helped the Mississippi State Bulldogs survive the onslaught that Kiara Leslie put on for North Carolina State tonight. Leslie scorched MSU’s defense for 27 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and swatted a shot away.

Speaking of blocks, Mississippi State basketball certainly blocked a few shots of their own tonight. McCowan had 4 blocks, Victoria Vivians was credited with 1, and then Morgan William had 2 against the Wolfpack.

Mississippi State’s defense performed well and kept most of the Wolfpack ineffective. Leslie was the only member from North Carolina State to work her way into double digits scoring tonight. While that was happening, Mississippi State had four of their starters score more than 10 points.


With the win, Mississippi State is now 35-1. The Bulldogs are on a 3 game winning streak and are back in the Elite Eight. Mississippi State doesn’t want the journey to end in Kansas City. This team has the components to move on.

The Bulldogs will have another chance to prove they belong in the championship conversation in their next game. A win in the Elite Eight gets Mississippi State Basketball into the Final Four. And we all remember what happened last time the Bulldogs were there.
