Mississippi State Baseball Got a Needed 17-1 Win over Alcorn State

Last night’s win could not have come at a better time for Gary Henderson and the Mississippi State Baseball team. The Bulldogs have been slumping recently and were swept this past weekend. Beating up on Alcorn State is a great way to build some confidence and blow off steam. And that’s what MSU did with a 17-1 victory.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs tallied their 17 runs last night off of 18 hits. 11 of those 18 hits were for extra bases. The Bulldogs hit 7 doubles, 2 triples, and 2 home runs off of Alcorn State’s pitching.

Leadoff hitter Jake Mangum had a double and a triple while Luke Alexander hit a double and a home run. Transfer catcher Marshall Gilbert hit the other homer of the evening and Hunter Vansau knocked a double and a triple, just like Mangum had.

If it wasn’t totally evident by the 18 base hits, Alcorn State’s pitching struggled. The Braves issued a total of 9 walks to Mississippi State last night.

MSU Relief Pitching Gets Back on Track

Mississippi State’s pitching, on the other hand, got a solid work out and shined throughout the evening. Henderson had 4 different pitchers take the mound with Josh Hatcher starting. Hatcher faced 8 batters in 2.0 innings of work and struck out 4 of them.

Then, Zach Neff came in during the 3rd inning, threw for 4.0 innings, recorded a pair of strikeouts, and earned the win. Riley Self took the mound for 2.0 innings of work before Kale Breaux came in and closed things out by striking out 3 batters.

Mississippi State baseball has another midweek game tonight and the Bulldogs need another solid win.  MSU can blow out Texas State just as they did to Alcorn State. And if they do, MSU will head to Missouri this weekend with momentum.
