Mississippi State Softball Takes Two of Three from Mizzou

The Mississippi State softball team claimed their first SEC series of the season. The Bulldogs went up to Columbia, Missouri and took two of their three games in the series away from the Tigers of Mizzou.

The Bulldogs relied heavily on their pitching depth and heavy hitting to come away with the 6-3 win today. Freshman Emily Williams earned her first SEC start of her career but only threw for 2.1 innings.

In the top of the third, senior Holly Ward stepped in and took control of the game. Ward went the rest of the game, throwing 69 total pitches in 4.2 innings and striking out 6 batters from the Tigers. The win moved Ward’s record to 10-2 this season.

At the plate, Mississippi State knocked around 10 hits in the game. The Bulldogs got their first run of the game via Kat Moore’s single that scored Sarai Niu. Moore would then move home thanks to a double from Calyn Adams, giving MSU a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning.

Mia Davidson extended State’s lead out to 3-0 with a solo shot over the left field wall in the top of the 3rd. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Mizzou tied things up after a double that scored two runs and an error that scored another.

With a 3-3 tie, Moore’s home run would give MSU a 4-3 lead. Then State scored again in the 4th inning with a bases loaded walk to Davidson, pushing the MSU advantage to 5-3. Mississippi State’s final run of the game arrived in the 6th inning as Bevia Robinson scored on a wild pitch. MSU would go on to win 6-3.

The 20th ranked Bulldogs are now 25-4 this year and will be returning home soon. Mississippi State will play Central Arkansas on Wednesday and then face the Georgia Bulldogs next weekend in the SEC home opener.
