Mississippi State Baseball Team Takes Series With Win over Utah Valley

Mississippi State needed a win and the Bulldogs got it. After losing to the Utah Valley Wolverines in game one of their doubleheader on Friday, the Bulldogs took game two. Still, Mississippi State could not afford to drop the series to an inferior opponent.

And so they didn’t. Mississippi State fell behind early today, but the Bulldogs pushed ahead and won 5-3 over Utah Valley. An RBI single from the Wolverines pushed them ahead 1 to nothing in the first inning. MSU wouldn’t be behind for very long though.

In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Tanner Allen’s double tied everything up at 1-1. An inning later, Rowdey Jordan put MSU up 4-1 with a three run jack over the right field fence. A single by Hunter Stovall scoring Jake Mangum would then get the Bulldogs a 5-1 lead.

Utah Valley would attempt a comeback. The Wolverines tried to cut the lead down in the top of the 6th inning. An RBI double with nobody out moved the game to 5-2. From there, Utah Valley tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly. But that 5-3 score wouldn’t get changed from there. Mississippi State held on and held UVU from scoring for the rest of the game.

After performing well for 5.0 innings, Jacob Billingsley is now 2-0 on the year. Billingsley threw 64 pitches and struck out 4 batters while on the mound. Denver McQuary came in during the 6th inning and allowed 2 earned runs in his time pitching.

Cole Marsh and Zach Neff combined to take care of the next two innings and struck out a batter each. J.P. France then came in for the 9th inning and got his first save of the season.

Mississippi State is now 10-6 on the year and the Bulldogs are 4-1 at the New Dudy Noble. MSU is set to head down to Biloxi to play against Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday. After the midweek game, Mississippi State will return to Starkville to start SEC play next weekend against Vanderbilt.
