Dan Mullen has faced every SEC team at least once in his seven years at Mississippi State.

Playing Missouri last November checked all the SEC boxes for playing a Dan Mullen-led MSU team. He’s defeated all the teams in those boxes except two, and he’ll get a shot at both of those teams this fall.

Coach Mullen is 55-35 during his tenure in Starkville. That includes a 26-30 record in SEC play. Here are his records against each team in the conference….

More from Mississippi State Bulldogs News

  • Kentucky, 7-0
  • Vanderbilt, 2-0
  • Tennessee, 1-0
  • Missouri, 1-0
  • Ole Miss, 4-3
  • Arkansas, 4-3
  • Georgia, 1-1
  • Florida, 1-1
  • Auburn, 3-4
  • Texas A&M, 1-3
  • LSU, 1-6
  • South Carolina, 0-2
  • Alabama, 0-7

As you can see, Mullen has had a lot more success in cross-divisional games than in the West. He is 13-4 against the East with half the losses coming to Steve Spurrier. The Gamecocks come to Starkville in Week 2, this time led by Will Muschamp.

Vs. West teams, however, Mullen is just 13-26. But after only beating Ole Miss in each of his first three years, Mullen has tallied 10 wins vs. the West in the last four seasons with only one of them vs. OM.

Alabama is Mullen’s white whale for sure. Late each season MSU has played the Tide, four different times having already won seven games on the season but have been soundly defeated each time.

There are some odd trends during Mullen’s seven years:

  • Never lost to Auburn and Ole Miss in the same year, but never defeated both in the same year
  • Beat Kentucky every year, lost to Alabama every year
  • Has beaten either Ole Miss or Arkansas every year; only beat both of them in 2013
  • All four 8-win regular seasons featured an undefeated record vs. the East, otherwise MSU won six or less games
  • Mullen’s home SEC record is 14-14 (.500), just two games better than on the road: 12-16 (.429)
