Mississippi State wins Starkville Regional!

Mississippi State swept the Starkville Regional with a 4-0 win over Louisiana Tech on Sunday night.

It was all business for MSU as they systematically stomped out Louisiana Tech and then celebrated in the same manner they would any win throughout the year.

State advances to the Super Regionals – to be hosted at Dudy Noble Field next weekend – vs. the winner of the Lafayette Regional. ULL and Arizona play for that privileged on Monday in a rain delayed Regional.

You can purchase tickets to the Super Regionals starting on Monday morning at 8:30. MSU officials have advised fans to print out the ticket to avoid long lines on game day. If it’s anything like the 2007 Super Regional vs. Clemson – it will be a loooooong line.

Zac Houston was the star of the show in this game with six scoreless innings. The outing earned him a spot on the all-Regional team along with five other Bulldogs ((Jake Mangum, Reid Humphreys, Brent Rooker (MVP of Regional), Jack Kruger and Ryan Gridley)).

A month ago I wrote an article inquiring who this year’s May pitching surprise would be, as Cohen has produced one in each of the year’s MSU has been to a Regional. It took until May 25th’s start in the SEC Tournament, but it appears Zac Houston has emerged as that guy. He is now leading the team with a 1.63 ERA and is 6-0.

Ryan Rigby is certainly not to be forgotten in this one, however, as he slammed the door on LA Tech. Zac Houston got into trouble in the 7th and loaded the bases with no outs – that’s when Rigby came in to strike out two batters then get a fly out to end the inning with no runs scored. He then closed out the game for his first save of the year.

Brent Rooker had a pair of RBIs in this game to raise his total for the weekend to six. His 4 for 10 performance, including two home runs, earned him MVP honors.

Reid Humphreys left the game after being hit by a pitch in the hand. He will be re-evaluated on Monday.

Louisiana-Lafayette will face Arizona today at 1:00. You can watch it on ESPN3.com.
