Reid Humphreys hurt his hand in the Regional final vs. Louisiana Tech and had to be removed from the game.
MSU’s left fielder and closer left the game on Sunday night after being hit by a pitch. He did play another couple of innings, but then was subbed by Cody Brown for the rest of the game. Today we learned about the extent of his injury…
This is indeed great news. It was Humphreys’ right hand, and he’s right handed. Which would really make it difficult to hit and especially throw a baseball.
Jacob Robson missed nearly a month earlier in the year with a broken pinky finger so the Bulldogs are all too familiar with hand injuries this year, in what has been a relatively fortunate year in that regard (knock on wood).

Humphreys will have at least four full days to rest his hand after being named to the all-Regional team by going 4 for 8. He did not get an opportunity to pitch, however. He could have five days of rest if MSU’s Super Regional starts on Saturday….which half of them do.
If his hand does not heal up in time to play this weekend, his replacement in left field would most likely be Cody Brown. While Brown’s batting average is 76 points less than Humphreys, his on base percentage is 16 points lower. Still, it would be a significant loss without a Ferriss Trophy finalist.
Coach Cohen has other options as well – he could start Brent Rooker in left field, DH Jack Kruger and play Elih Merrero at catcher. If Humphreys is out for two games, I’d suspect Brown would start Game 1 and Merrero Game 2.
As far as closing, it would be tough not to hand that job to Ryan Rigby anyway. He was lights out vs. LA Tech and is carrying a cool 1.75 ERA in 46.1 innings this year.
But hopefully that speculation will be for naught. It’s time for the Super Regionals so I’m sure Reid will be ready to go even if there’s some pain.
