Sunday Mornings at the Veranda on a Game Weekend

There’s nothing quite as beautiful as a Sunday morning in Starkville following a Bulldog win.  After a full day of tailgating, the excitement of the game and a night of celebrating my wife and I tend to sleep a bit late on Sunday following game day.  But when we wake, we’re usually starving and in need of a hearty breakfast.

The Sunday brunch at the Veranda has quickly become one of our favorite post-game Sunday morning rituals.  Sunday brunch begins at 10 a.m. and is served until 2 p.m.  You’ll want to get there right at 10 or soon thereafter, because the place fills quickly and by 11 am and you will be likely have to wait to be seated.

The brunch menu is extremely reasonable at $10 and includes breakfast choices, as well as more traditional lunch fare, such as fried chicken, chicken & dumplings, and red beans and rice.  This is great for us, because I am a huge breakfast fan and can pretty much eat it any time of day.  My wife tends to eschew breakfast any later than 9 am, so this accommodates our preferences quite nicely.

Due to local liquor laws, you’ll have to wait until 11 am if you want that Bloody Mary or Mimosa. But if you are Bloody Mary fan, you will definitely want to try one of the Veranda’s specialty Bloody Marys. They are superb and loaded with garnishes, so you can’t go wrong with any of them.

My personal favorite is the Eggs Benedict. At $12, they are slightly more than the other brunch items, but you get the same side choices available on the brunch menu. There are five to choose from – Old School Benedict, Crawfish Benedict, Smoked Salmon Benedict, Crab Cake Benedict, and the Boudreaux Benedict (perfect for you LSU fans in town for the game.)  I normally stick with the Old School Benedict, but I have tried the Crawfish and it was quite good.

It’s been a few months since our last visit so I’m not sure if he’s still there, but I would be remiss if I did not mention our favorite waiter, Tyler.  We always ask for him whenever we visit.  Tyler knows the menu, is familiar with the preparation of the food, and is extremely accommodating.  He almost anticipates what we need before we even ask.  He has served us twice and he even remembered from one visit to the next my preference for honey and heavy whipping cream in my coffee.

It’s hard to beat the Veranda on a Sunday morning.  The atmosphere is superb and you get a lot of value for your money.  If you’ve never been there for the Sunday brunch, you’ll definitely want to give it a try this football season.
