The Receivers Must Step Up

The receivers at Mississippi State in 2014 are quite possibly the best we have ever had. We have had some good individual receivers, but the collection that we have now is as good as any I have ever seen. They haven’t gotten much publicity. Despite the fact that Jameon Lewis is the leading returning receiver in the SEC, he was only selected for the Preseason 3rd Team All SEC.

Having said all that, the other guys have to step up. Wilson has the tools to be a great deep threat. He is tall and fast and can go up and get the ball if Dak needs to just throw up a jump ball. Robert Johnson showed that he loves contact, especially late last year. Instead of running toward the sidelines, he often put his head down like a running back and would run tacklers over. He has the tools to be a great possession receiver and get the 6 and 7 yard receptions we need to keep drives going on 3rd down. And Malcolm Johnson might simply be the most underrated tight end in the league. He is an athletic tight end that can make plays and I expect him to make a lot with a running quarterback like Prescott in the back field. Prescott will extend plays that aren’t there and Johnson will be a great safety outlet for Prescott to get the ball to in those situations.
