Mississippi State is still searching for an offensive identity while BYU seems to have found theirs. The Cougars have faced a tough schedule so far, and are 3-3. But all three of those losses have been by a combined seven points.

The Cougars have a tough, physical running back and offensive philosophy this year. That doesn’t bode well as LSU and Auburn used the same attack to dismantle the Bulldog defense.

More from Mississippi State Football

We know Dan Mullen wants MSU to be a balanced offense, running and throwing 50/50. The main problems have been dropped passes by the wide outs, short to no gain runs by Brandon Holloway on zone reads and an offensive line that is mediocre at best.

So is there any hope in this game? Sure. But it’s all about the mental aspect of the game. In all honesty, it’s probably best for MSU to be on the road.

The Bulldogs need to hunker down and play together if they want to have a chance. Hopefully the mental preparation has been good this week. The mental toughness has to be there during the game, and a full-on effort will be needed.

State can go in two directions this year. They can fold up their tents and go 2-10 or 3-9, or they can still fight for a bowl game. If they can muster wins at BYU and Kentucky – which is certainly doable – then they’ve got a shot to upset Arkansas in Week 12 at home. That would give the Dawgs six wins.

Can they do it? Yes. Will they do it? That’s the sixty-four thousand dollar question.
