How does the Maroon and White Nation team think MSU football will fare in 2016?

The college football season is quickly approaching. The level of hope around the Mississippi State football program isn’t exactly at an all time high. The departure of several key players and, most importantly, the uncertainty at quarterback has MSU fans unsure how to feel entering 2016. Don’t worry Bulldog fans, the staff at M&WN is here to help. We are going to breakdown every game and tell you whether or not we believe MSU will win and why.

After a bye week to open the month on October, MSU welcomes Auburn to town on Saturday October 8th. This is the start of the stretch of the season, which includes eight weeks without a bye and six SEC opponents. Auburn may have been the most disappointing team in all the nation in 2015. The Tigers struggled to be bowl eligible barely beating Kentucky and Jacksonville State. Going into their 2015 match up with the Bulldogs, Auburn changed quarterbacks but that didn’t help much. It will be that same position the Tigers will have to figure out to be successful in 2016.

My Picks

2016 is a big year for Auburn and head coach Guz Malzhan. The Tigers need a successful year or they could be looking for a new head coach come December. I don’t think this is the year for Auburn and Mississippi State gets the best of the Tigers for the third straight year. This one’s close, though, MSU by a touchdown.

Loss vs. Auburn – getting the hat trick vs. Auburn will be really tough. Mullen has had a lot of success against the Tigers when you factor in three final possession losses and the three wins over the last six years. This will be a tight game between evenly matched teams, and basically I’m picking it as a loss because I don’t think State will go undefeated in swing games.

The Tigers return to Davis Wade Stadium to try and take away momentum from the Dawgs. With a coach seemingly on the ropes in the Gus Bus, I think Auburn will get absolutely demolished in this game. 24 point trouncing for the Bulldogs on the Tigers of Auburn, and the flames around the Auburn coaching staff get much higher.

Having a week off going into to this one should help us.  I think the open date comes at a good time.  Meanwhile, Auburn will be playing their first game away from home in 2016, another fact that I think helps us.  We’ve played well against Auburn under Mullen and I believe we win this one.

The M&WN guys are a little split on this one. This could have a major impact on the season. A win could help snowball some momentum as we reach the heart of the schedule but a loss could start a downward spiral at the wrong time. MSU has a short week after this as they head on the road again to face BYU.
