SEC Roundup - March 31, 2014

So….the SEC is 11-1 in the NCAA Tournament with two Final Four teams. Hmm. Florida will play UConn on Saturday and Kentucky will play Wisconsin for the right to play for the national championship – and we could have a rematch of the SEC Championship Game.

This kind of reminds me of the year Mississippi State made the Final Four in 1996. The SEC wasn’t highly thought of and only received four bids: UK, MSU, UGA and ARK. All of them made the Sweet 16, including Georgia who was an 8 seed and Arkansas who was a 12 seed. UGA was only bounced after a triple OT game vs. eventual national runner-up Syracuse, MSU beat #1 seed UConn and #2 seed Cincinnati on the way to the Final Four before losing to Syracuse as well, and Kentucky won the national title. Overall the SEC was 14-3 that year.

SEC Baseball Standings

1. Mississippi State, 6-3
1. Alabama, 6-3
3. Auburn, 5-4
4. Arkansas, 4-5
4. Ole Miss, 4-5
6. Texas A&M, 4-5
7. LSU, 3-5-1

1. Florida, 6-3
1. South Carolina, 6-3
3. Vanderbilt, 5-4
4. Kentucky, 4-5
5. Georgia, 3-5-1
6. Tennessee, 3-6
7. Missouri, 3-6

LSU in last place in the West is a complete shock. They were preseason #3 in the nation – but, of course, MSU was #2. Still, we are sitting atop the division right now. But things can turn pretty quickly, and a trip to Baton Rouge this weekend could flip those standings, or State could do some real damage to the Bayou Bengals.
