SEMO has an RPI of 126 so it wasn’t completely out of nowhere that the Bulldogs had to fight for this victory, but it wasn’t expected. The offense continues to going through periods of scuffling – although they had 8 hits in this game they just didn’t have many timely ones. The bases were loaded with 0 out in the 8th inning and State failed to score.
Tuesday night was a night with a couple of upsets. Ole Miss lost Southern Miss and LSU lost to Tulane. But MSU avoided the upset by winning in the bottom of the 9th.
Austin Sexton got the start and went 2.2 before the call to the bullpen to get Vance Tatum. Cohen said on Monday he would try to get some guys some work on the mound and he did that, also using Myles Gentry for an inning and Brandon Woodruff for two scoreless frames. Tatum and Gentry each game up a run apiece.
With the game on the line Johnathan Holder pitched the 8th and the 9th and got the win.
The game-winning hit scored Zach Randolph (who went 2 for 4). It was Henderson’s second hit of the game and brought his team-leading batting average up to .352.
MSU is now 18-9 (4-2). Arkansas comes to Starkville this weekend.
