MSU Drops Opener vs. UGA

Well that was bad. 7-1 Georgia in Game 1.

Ben Bracewell got the start and he did not fare as well as he had previously this year: 2 IP, 5 hits, 2 ER. Austin Sexton and Vance Tatum followed him giving up 2 ER each as well.

The offense did not help things. Perhaps Cohen didn’t bring in Ross Mitchell because he saw that UGA starter Ryan Lawlor was mowing his hitters down. The (good) Bulldogs didn’t muster a run until the 8th when they scratched across one of the unearned variety.

Coach Cohen tried something different in this game – inserting Seth Heck into the leadoff spot. With the lefty on the hill the lineup only featured two left-handed hitters so Vickerson was out. Heck went 1 for 4.

Perhaps the only good news of the evening was Alex Detz breaking out of his slump a little bit with a 3 for 4 night. Hopefully he’ll continue that trend and his teammates will join.

MSU is now 13-8 (0-1) on the year. Game 2 will be at 11:00 and will be televised by Fox Sports Net. It will be a part of a double header due to rain in Georgia on Sunday – Game 3 will take place 45 minutes after Game 2.
