M&WN Picks the BCS Title Game

Tonight at 7:30 (CST) Auburn will take on Florida State for the BCS National Championship. After it’s done – goodbye BCS and hello playoff! But until then, let’s give our picks…

Grass of Davis Wade: Auburn. They probably shouldn’t win, but hey, they shouldn’t have won against Bama, Georgia, or against us either. Heck, OSU scored 24 unanswered points to take the lead against Mich. St. and the Spartans still won. This team has some magical juju juice. They will find a way to win. I don’t know how, but they will.

Dirty Panda: Florida State. It’s difficult to pick against the team of destiny, but unfortunately I think Auburn’s luck runs out here. I wasn’t a believer in FSU until the Duke game. Not that Duke is a very legitimate barometer of an opposing team’s strength, but it was more so the way FSU absolutely dismantled a team whose M.O. is execution and ‘us against all the non-believers’.

FSU gets the edge in my book because, while both offenses are nearly unstoppable, I believe their defense comes up with a few more stops than Auburn’s. Their defense is loaded with playmakers. FSU looks, both on offense and defense, what an SEC powerhouse typically looks like. To me, they’re a carbon copy of what UGA nearly was last year. Luckily for FSU, though, their title shot won’t go through Tuscaloosa.

Croom Diaries: Auburn. I think this game will be close. Both defenses will get some stops in the first half and it will open up offensively in the 2nd half. FSU has not been in a close game all year, Auburn defines close games. That benefits the Tigers and I think they pull it out.
