Mississippi State to play Rice in 2013 Liberty Bowl

liberty bowlMississippi State (6-6) will play Conference USA champions Rice (10-3) in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. The game will be played on December 31st, 3:00 CST at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee.

This will be MSU’s 4th appearance in the Liberty Bowl (2-1). It’s the first since 2007′s 10-3 win over Central Florida. State beat N.C. State 16-12 in the last Liberty Bowl played in the city of its namesake, Philadelphia, PA in 1963. The game was played in the bitter cold with temperatures dipping into the teens and only 8,000 showed up for the game. It was moved to Atlantic City in 1964, then Memphis in 1965 where it has been ever since. Our only other appearance was in Jackie Sherrill’s first year, 1991, against Air Force….a 38-15 loss.

MSU has only played Rice once in our football history. It was a 28-14 win on the field, in Houston, but was forfeited to the Owls due to the Larry Gillard “discount”.
