Mississippi State vs. Arkansas Preview

It’s about time for our date with the Hogs. This is a huge game – a must win for the Bulldogs. As we said earlier in the week, something will happen in this game that hasn’t happened before. We don’t yet know what that will be, however. The Dawgs are 1.5 point favorites in Little Rock.

When the Razorbacks have the ball look out for Alex Collins at tailback. He is only a freshman but is a rising star in the SEC already averaging 94 YPG on a team that struggles to throw the ball. Arkansas has turned the ball over 18 times this year which is tied for 11th in the SEC, while the Dawgs’ D has forced seven turnovers in the last two weeks (after none the previous two).

Who will play QB is still a mystery for State. Things don’t look good for Dak Prescott, and they are iffy for Tyler Russell, so it may be Damian Williams leading the offense. The Hogs defense has been hapless at times. There was a stretch during the middle of the season where they were outscored 104-0 over the stretch of a couple of games.

MSU rushing offense: 194 YPG (41st) vs. ARK rushing defense: 171 YPG (71st)

MSU passing offense: 239 YPG (58th) vs. ARK passing defense: 229 YPG (58th)

MSU scoring offense: 27.5 PPG (74th) vs. ARK scoring defense: 31.4 PPG (92nd)

MSU total offense: 433 YPG (51st) vs. ARK total defense: 400 YPG (64th)

ARK rushing offense: 210 YPG (27th) vs. MSU rushing defense: 147 YPG (38th)

ARK passing offense: 149 YPG (115th) vs. MSU passing defense: 226 YPG (58th)

ARK scoring offense: 20.4 PPG (110th) vs. MSU scoring defense: 26.5 PPG (63rd)

ARK total offense: 359 YPG (101st) vs. MSU total defense: 374 YPG (45th)

There you have it – in every head to head category, offense and defense, Mississippi State is the same or better. Arkansas’ bread and butter is all about the run game – Bielema makes no bones about it he wants to win running the football. MSU has the best run defense of any team they’ve played except Florida and Alabama, and they scored a combined 10 points vs. those two.

No excuses we have to win this game. It’s so important. It sets up everything going into the Egg Bowl.
