Yes, this week our Mississippi State Bulldogs will be hosting the undefeated, reigning national champion Alabama Crimson Tide. Yes, the Tide have beaten our Bulldogs for the last 5 years in a row. Yes, all the “experts” have already penciled Alabama into this year’s BCS championship game. Yes, they’re probably right to do so. In fact, they probably already have the trophy at the engraver’s. Yes, Vegas has our Dawgs as 25.5 point underdogs. It’s a real Dan vs Goliath situation. We know how David fared against Goliath in the Old Testament, but David was chosen by God. I’m not convinced God generally cares all that much one way or the other about the outcome of a football game. Statistically, David was an anomaly. In this sort of match-up, more than nine times out of ten Goliath will roll and David will be squashed. But not every time… And all it takes is one time.
The chance of Mississippi State pulling the upset of Saban’s boys this weekend is somewhere between slim and none. There is, however, still a chance… Provided no one decides Bear Bryant’s statue needs another t-shirt.
That t-shirt last year said, “We Believe!” This year we’re not “believing.” We’re not even “hoping”, as the dictionary defines hope as desiring with the reasonable expectation of receiving. This year, we’re WISHING.
Wish hard, my friends. Wish hard. All it takes is ONE TIME.
