Bulldog Safeties Take Another Blow

The safety position has been pretty lackluster of late, and it might get worse. Junior Dee Arrington will miss the rest of the season with an unspecified injury. He joins fellow safety Jay Hughes on the injured list – Hughes tore his Achilles in the 1st quarter of the 1st game vs. Oklahoma State.

Speaking of Achilles, that’s the same injury Nickoe Whitley had in 2011 vs. Alabama. Speaking of Alabama, that’s who we play this week. More bad news – they’ve got a Heisman Trophy candidate at quarterback and three receivers with over 350 yards this year.

Some good news – Whitley’s interception against A&M was his 4th of the season, and 14th of his career. He is now just two away from tying Johnthan Banks and Walt Harris on the MSU all-time career INT list at 16. It’s been feast or famine for Nickoe this year – he’s blown a lot of coverage, and then there was the ejection for two personal fouls vs. Kentucky. Hopefully he can pull it together over the final three games because we really need him to play well with these injuries.

We may see Justin Cox play a little more safety – he was a 4-star at that position coming out of EMCC last fall. Kendrick Market is also back there as well as Deontay Evans and Kivon Coman.
